Jamille Matt's strike put Argyle ahead and Reuben Reid added to the lead from the penalty spot after Matt was fouled. Will Boyle's own goal should have put the game out of reach, but York's Russell Penn pulled one back with a drilled finish after the break.

Northampton Town set a club record of nine successive league wins with a narrow victory over Wycombe Wanderers. Despite Northampton's first-half dominance, Jason McCarthy's drilled shot could have put Wycombe in front. But the Cobblers went ahead on 63 minutes when Ricky Holmes set up Danny Rose to rifle in his first goal for the club from 12 yards out.

A Will Grigg hat-trick helped promotion-chasing Wigan to see off League One play-off hopefuls Port Vale. Wigan took an early lead when Yanic Wildschut's cross-shot was turned into the net by Grigg. The Latics' second came from Grigg penalty's after Vale defender Ryan McGivern had been sent off for fouling the striker in the box.

Sheffield United progressed to the second round of the FA Cup after beating non-league Worcester City 3-0. Mid-way through the first half City right-back Sam Minihan brought down Che Adams in the penalty area, and Jose Baxter scored from the spot. But the Blades had to wait until late on to achieve some breathing space when Conor Sammon's close-range finish left the visitors dispirited.

Two second-half goals helped Scunthorpe United come from one down to beat Shrewsbury Town in League One. Shrewsbury went ahead on 15 minutes through loan striker Sully Kaikai's effort from outside of the box - his third goal in two matches. Scunthorpe equalised early in the second half through Scott Laird, who rose above Abu Agogo to head in.

Nottingham have announced that Australian forward Dan Montagu has been named the club captain. The 31-year-old takes over the role from Brent Wilson, who retired at the end of the 2014-15 season. "Martin Haag spoke to me a few weeks back. I said I would be more than happy to do it. I was happy that he selected me," he told BBC Radio Nottingham.

Teenage amateur golfer Alister Balcombe says he can "compete with the best players in the world" ahead of making his Open Championship bow this week. The 19-year-old's focus is on achieving the Open silver medal, awarded to the highest-ranking amateur golfer. "I want to play as golf as I can," he told BBC Radio Bristol.

British sprinter Elijah Skervin says that qualifying for the Rio Olympics would be a "dream come true." The 23-year-old has set his sights on making the Team GB relay squad for the 2016 Games, which start next August. Skervin, who trains in Loughborough, is the fastest ever 100m male runner from the East Midlands, with a best time of 10.33 seconds.

Ultra-cyclist Shusanah Pillinger says she "saw goblins" as she made history by completing the 3,004-mile Race Across America (RAAM) last month. The 39-year-old Briton completed the race from California to Maryland in 12 days, nine hours and 14 minutes. She said hallucinations during her "witching hour" were common.

Northampton Town boss Chris Wilder says that it is "business as usual" despite uncertainty over the club's ownership. The League Two side are set to be taken over by an Indian consortium after both parties signed a heads of terms agreement last week. "As far as I'm concerned, it's business as usual," the former Oxford boss told BBC Radio Northampton.

Uncapped Derbyshire seamer Mark Footitt has been named in England's squad for the pre-Ashes training camp. The left-arm bowler, 29, has taken 32 wickets in Division Two this season. Footitt is the only uncapped player in the squad, while all-rounder Chris Jordan and leg-spinner Adil Rashid miss out.
